An Officer’s Duty is the second novel in the Their’s Not to Reason Why series by Jean Johnson. This is not the first military adventure novel I have ever read, nor series, but it is one of the better ones. Jean Johnson does not take it for granted her audience is intelligent and mixes action and the rules and regulations of military life entertainingly, and, from my research, very accurate.
One thing this series has from all the other military novels I’ve read, except for the Halo series, it takes place in space. Technically the story is science fiction, but the story-telling is so well done the reader is in all the action and nothing is so far-fetched or “science fictiony” the mind boggles. This is exactly what good science fiction does.
The universe Jean Johnson has created with A Soldier’s Duty and An Officer’s Duty, so far, is not so different from current history the reader has a difficult time comprehending the changes, slang, or how the different races of the known universe are observed. In fact, the blending of it all transports the reader into the problems Ia, the main character and true focal point of these stories; faces and survives flawlessly.
Some have placed these books erroneously in the “romance” category, but this is some of the finest adventuring science fiction yours truly has read for a while.
Hellfire is next on my list.
Happy reading everyone!
