Now that things have settled down somewhat on the familial front, I spent some time sitting and thinking about what I wanted to accomplish this summer. Since summer is my best time physically, I do a lot of getting out. Getting out of the apartment/house is necessary for sanity, but it throws kinks into the writing time. This summer I am going to write and get something published, even if it is only on Kindle or Nook formats. Some say the self-publishing is genuine “vanity”, but it can also boost your confidence as well as your writing ability. Like everything else – the more you write the better you get. To help push me beyond this “vanity” of self-publishing I steeled myself and subscribed to Writer’s Market dot com.
The last time I subscribed I cancelled it because I wasn’t using it. At. All. Today I subscribed and did a preliminary search for publications, saved a few, and even made some notes for an article or two I could write and . It doesn’t sound like much, does it, but by the time I had done these few things I was nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof because I was investing in myself. I invested some of my income, which is already tiny, into myself. There was a part of my brain screaming at me the entire time not to “waste” what little money I have. The writerly part of my brain was calm and determined. So, I am going to do my best with adopting that portion of my brain for this summer and the rest of the year.
Along with genuinely investing in my writing, progress has been made on the final draft of WHRT. In going over what was written so far and what will come next, there was a blaring lapse in continuity I caught. Monday I will have to re-work a section already done, but the words that will come out of it will not hurt the progress for the remainder of the story itself. While WHRT is progressing another piece will begin. It is the Emily Post mystery. Does anyone remember her? Well, death has come to Lexington, but it isn’t the Death after her. Emily will have to rely on her talents and her friends and break out of her shell to solve the mystery and save one or more of her friends. I am really excited to finally begin work on this story. According to several different blogs of published authors, this is normal: There is a final draft you work on while you work on another creative writing project. Keeping track of everything and moving forward with both projects is going to require commitment on my part and careful time management.
The scaredy cat part of me screams, “You are doing too much! You are biting off more than you can chew!” The determined writer side yells back, “I know we can do it!”
