Things Get Complicated

Life rolls along whether you are ready for it or not.  Things also get complicated when you are least ready for them.  How could anything become more complicated in the middle of a move?   Getting the flu, that’s how.  Yes, dear friends, I have the flu.

A friend, who shall remain nameless, came over to help us pack up Saturday and was nasally, but said he was fine.  He left for a quick snack and came back saying he thought he was getting the flu.  I sent him back home immediately, but he had already been here for several hours which meant my immune system, which is already compromised because of the arthritis, was overwhelmed.  I was sick Saturday night.  I have been sick since.

Even though I am sick, the move must still happen.  I haven’t been supervising that much either saying this can go or stay.  The Hubs says he knows I am sick because I have either been whiny or grumpy – mostly grumpy – and thus I  feeling really bad.  He is right.

The thing that makes me feel sad in all of this is that I almost made it through the winter without being seriously ill.  I was so careful this year by making sure to use hand sanitizer when I was out, and not going out too often in a crowded bus where influenza germs could get me, and Carlos made sure to wash his hands a lot at work and even change his clothes as soon as he came home if he had been around someone who was ill.  Sniffles, when she was ill, stayed away for an entire week to help me stay healthy, and Cheyenne did the same.  It almost worked.   Almost.  However, I can’t really complain too much – this is the first bout of flu I have had all winter, and this is a much better record than last, where it felt as if I was sick the entire winter!

Today begins Phase 1 of moving the bigger portion of furniture to the storage building.  This includes the room that was supposed to be my knitting room.  All of my lovely yarn is going to have to be moved for a while – the apartment won’t hold us and the yarn.  Sacrifices must be made.  There are several works-in-progress that will go with me to the apartment, of course, and several more are already planned.  I believe knitting will help me to feel relaxed once this move is complete.  My goal for this summer is to make myself several lap covers for the coming winter so there can be a choice of which one to take when I go out.

I would like to knit a Halloween themed lap cover, a Thanksgiving one, and several Christmas ones as well as just simple one or two color lap covers for when I go out or sit at home and need a little extra something over my legs and tops of my feet.  The bigger items, like this, will help me train myself to sit through an entire sweater project, because the ribbing from the Hubs and Cheyenne about never getting their promised sweaters is getting old.  I can knit a sweater, dang it!  I just like the satisfaction of seeing a finished project and thus like shorter ones.  Yes, I get impatient.

Although I am going to miss my little house, my little home, I am looking forward to sitting out on the covered deck of the apartment and reading this summer.  It is also enclosed, which means Chewie and Gabby can also go outside with me while I am reading.  Gabby hasn’t gotten to sit with me while I have read outside in a very long time, and Chewie has never gotten to do so.   I am still concerned about walking him, Chewie, but one bridge at a time, especially now.
